While using disciplines such as sociology, philosophy, literature, history, communication and psychology, this program will examine how culture works as well as how it affects different aspects of your life. This course is designed to engage students in issues that arise within the personal, professional and social contexts typical of American culture and the global economy.
CMGS courses focus on three main studies. The first area includes cultural studies - here you will study the significance and effects of cultural products and practices including entertainment, celebrity, fashion, subcultures, shopping habits and spaces, etc. The second area includes Media Studies - here you will study various media forms and genres such as television, film, the internet, advertising, news reporting and public relations. The third area includes Gender Studies - here your studies will examine how gendered identities and meanings are constructed.
Some of the elected courses offered in the CMGS minor include; History of Sex and Abstinence, History Goes to the Movies, Media Culture and Identity, Art and Culture, To Be a Woman in Latin America.
Weather you're a freshman or senior, this new and exciting minor could fit perfectly with a person studying Communication, English, or History, but is of course not limited to a particular field of study. If you are interested in the CMGS minor please contact Dr. Jen Caruso, jacaruso58@marianuniversity.edu for more information.
